The data contained in this collection represents the fire protection districts of the State of Arkansas. This collection was derived from district polygons formerly created and maintained by the GIS Applications Laboratory at the University of Arkansas Little Rock. These polygons represent fire protection jurisdictional boundaries established by local authority. Fire protection services may be established as a function of municipal government services provided by a city or town. For unincorporated areas the fire protection districts are established by the County Quorum Court pursuant to A.C.A. § 14-284-207. Municipal Fire Districts within this collection are updated following the effective date of municipal boundary changes typically due to the addition of municipal territory through the annexation process. These updates in turn necessitate adjustments to neighboring districts that continue to operate in county territory. Municipal districts may also be affected by other municipal change processes such as detachment or consolidation.
This data set represents the fire protection districts of the State of Arkansas. Arkansas Code Annotated (A.C.A.) §12-10-329, is a section of state law devoted to 9-1-1 public safety and dictates each fire district must maintain an accurate map that is certified by the Mayor, County Judge or County Fire Coordinator and transmitted to the Arkansas GIS Office. The statute requires the Arkansas GIS Office to maintain these maps and to assist the Arkansas 911 Board in carrying out its duties.

Stores the name of the fire district.
Stores the name of the county or counties served by the fire district. NOTE: Numerous fire districts have territory residing in two or more counties. When a district resides in two or more counties the county name is listed in alphabetic order.
Stores the Fire Department Identification number also known as the National Fire Incident Reporting System unique identification number for each department. This unique number is also stored in the Arkansas Fire Portal. See https://arfire.arkansas.gov See also https://www.usfa.fema.gov/nfirs/about/
Stores a descriptor of the fire district type.
Stores the revision date the individual fire district boundary polygon was changed. This is the edit date of the polygon. The date is formatted as year-month-day (yyyymmdd).
Stores a hyper link to a county quorum court document dictating the fire district boundary pursuant to A.C.A. § 14-284-207 which states the quorum court shall furnish the fire protection district with a map indicating the service area of the fire protection district.
Stores the calculated square miles of area fully contained within the fire district. The square mileage area calculation is derived from a geometry calculation of each boundary polygon.
Stores an estimated number of households within the fire district. The estimated number of households is derived from the Housing Unit count contained in the most recent edition of the decennial census block file. A housing unit is a living quarters in which the occupant or occupants live separately from any other individuals in the building and have direct access to their living quarters from out-side the building or through a common hall. The estimated number of addresses is derived from the Arkansas GIS Office address point file.
